Can you save the game manually?
- The most important thing to know is that you cannot manually save the game. No manual or quick saves are provided. This means you won't be able to save right before a difficult or dangerous location.
- The game automatically saves at the end of each day. This happens when you use the captain's cabin bed at your main base.
- After restarting the game, you can start from the last auto-save or choose one of the older saves. Every save in the game is thoroughly described - apart from the date of its creation, you can learn about unlocked alters, the state of supplies in the base, or the currently active tasks.
How and why should you secure save files?
- A significant limitation is that the game automatically deletes the oldest saves and creates new ones in their place. This may lead to a situation where you can't go back to a previous act or moment of the campaign.
- You can reduce the problem by using the Secure Save option - it's in the top right corner of the screen. After using it, the current save will not be deleted. This is a good way to keep important saves on the disk, for example, from the beginning of a new act or before performing important tasks.

- Unlike such games as Kingdom Come 2, unfortunately The Alters doesn't save while quitting. You can only load a save that happened at the end of a day. Closing the game early will result in losing progress from the most recent day, that is, from the last autosave.
