The Alters: How to avoid radiation and magnetic storms?
How to avoid the effects of radiation in The Alters game? Our guide provides important tips on avoiding and recognizing areas with high radiation, as well as recovering after John is irradiated.

How to get rid of radiation in The Alters? On this page of the guide, we focus on one of the biggest threats to the main character and his Alters. You will find out about dangerous, radioactive locations, how to protect the base from radiation as well as how to survive a magnetic storm and remove the effects of radiation to heal Jan and his alters.

When does radiation appear?
- Radiation is one of the major threats you have to deal with throughout the game. While it primarily concerns Jan, it may also affect his Alters.
- Radiation is mostly an issue during nighttime. After 8 PM you will get a warning about approaching radiation. You have 1 minute to return to base - you should not ignore this message. If you are far from the base, look for fast travel points in the area.
- Certain areas on the map are highly contaminated by radiation. Those are mostly Enriched Metal Deposits - all of them are marked yellow on the map.
- Staying and working in a contaminated area slowly fills the radiation bar of the character. When this happens, you should mind the time spent on extraction.
- Jan can also become radioactive after coming across an anomaly - we have described it in more detail on a separate page How to avoid anomalies?. You should maintain a safe distance from the anomaly, slowly avoiding it. In case of receiving a strong radiation dose, retreat to a safe place.
- As you progress in the game, the radiation may intensify due to its increased activity. The game will warn you about it the first time it happens.
- Increased planet activity means less time to work outside, as lethal radiation may appear earlier. It can also be stronger during the night.
How to protect the base from radiation?
- Your base protects you from radiation thanks to the radiation barrier. It's not enabled by default - you'll have to visit the machinery first.
- Another difficulty is that the radiation barrier needs radiation filters to function. You'll have to craft them at the workshop (10 metals and 40 organics). The process can be automated - the radiation barrier can then refill filters from the warehouse automatically.
- The barrier requires one filter per day but it's always worth having 3-4 extra filters in case of emergency.
- Progressing through the game unlocks new research projects, which can make it easier for you to get rid of radiation effects.
- Suit upgrades are technologies tied to Jan's suit. Each such completed project can increase the suit's radiation resistance. Unfortunately, you'll need special planetary samples to complete the research.
- The radiation repulsor, on the other hand, is a key item used to protect the base. It also requires planetary samples.
- After inventing the technology, you can craft repulsors at your base - they require 30 metals, 40 minerals and 30 rapidium each. They can increase the effectiveness of radiation filters. By having several you'll be ultimately able to stop using filters entirely.
How to combat the effects of radiation?
- The activated radiation barrier gradually reduces the radiation level for Jan and his alters - it's a slow process that doesn't get rid of the negative effects immediately.
- You should also know that a deactivated barrier causes a gradual increase in radiation for all characters staying at the base. It's not an immediate death sentence, but you should quickly get to producing and installing another filter.
- Visiting the Infirmary heals radiation quicker, though you need to build it in the base first. It's available for both Jan and his alters.
- You can use the beds in the Infirmary to speed up the process of curing radiation. Unfortunately, doing so will make you start the next day late. We recommend doing this if your radiation level is dangerously high.
How to avoid a magnetic storm?
- Shortly after using the luminator for the first time in Act 1, the first magnetic storm will appear. The game warns you about it with a message. When it happens you have to hide in the base as quickly as possible - reach the nearest fast travel point.
- Jan and his Alters cannot leave the base until the storm is over. However, this does not mean they must stay idle. They can all work at the base, while the daily working time can be extended to 12 hours.
During a storm, focus on three main things:
- Make radiation filters - they get used up much faster and you can run out sooner.
- Repair the base - malfunctions are much more frequent during storms. You should prioritise fixing them. Jan the Technician can handle it.
- Make repair kits - you'll need them to fix major malfunctions. Make sure you don't run out.
- You'll have to patiently wait for the storm to (you can sleep through it too). Only then can you resume your tasks and work outside the base.
- We recommend researching Magnetic Storm Analysis as early as possible, which you should unlock after your first magnetic storm. It will allow you to predict the next storms. Use it to craft radiation filters and repair kits in advance, as well as bring all characters back to the base.
