A Polish RPG based on the board game of the same name, set in a fantasy world inspired by Arthurian legends and featuring gameplay similar to The Elder Scrolls series. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon was developed by Awaken Realms and the script was written by fantasy novelist Krzysztof Piskorski.
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an RPG set in a fantasy world inspired by Arthurian legends, developed by the independent Polish studio Awaken Realms Digital.
The project was completed partially using funds raised from a crowdfunding campaign to create a board game under the same title. The crowdfunding for the board game Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon was a huge success. Suffice it to say that gathering the necessary amount took less than a minute, while a total of nearly 5 million pounds was collected.
During development, the concept of the game completely changed. Initially the developers planned to create an isometric RPG, but they ultimately decided to present the action from a first-person perspective (FPP).
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon features an open world. While exploring it, we discover grim locations and meet their inhabitants, complete various quests, and also make choices that affect the course of the story.
Dynamic battles with opponents also play an important role here. Enemies include monsters created by Wyrdness. They are eliminated using various types of melee weapons and ranged weapons, as well as magic. We can also rely on stealth to avoid enemies or kill them by surprise. During the adventures, we develop the character's skills and acquire or craft increasingly better equipment.
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon takes us on a journey to a fantasy universe inspired by Arthurian legends. King Arthur is dead, the Knights of the Round Table are scattered, and the inhabitants of the titular island of Avalon must desperately fight for survival, facing the plague of the Red Death and the so-called Wyrdness - a mysterious force distorting everything in a chaotic way that comes within its range.
During the game, we play as a hero who gradually discovers this gloomy land and its secrets, as well as gets to know its inhabitants and the factions operating here, each of which has its own idea for the future of the island. We have to make numerous (often morally ambiguous) decisions in the game, which affect both the fate of the hero we lead and the future of the entire land.

It’s clear that The Fall of Avalon aims for Bethesda-level ambition without the resources to fully back it up. Still, beneath the rough edges lies a rich RPG experience that—when it works—keeps you engaged for hours.

Got your hopes up for Chernobylite 2? This could go either way, but there's another AA Eurojank RPG on the horizon. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a kind of „little Skyrim,” which may turn out to have a great story.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is not simply „Polish Skyrim”. It’s a well crafted RPG that surprises with great atmosphere, interesting story and the developers’ ingenuity when faced with limitations of the technical or budgetary nature.
ZTGD: 6.5 / 10 by Terrence Johnson
Look, in the middle of all this chaos, the world does have atmosphere. Gritty, creepy, and weirdly beautiful at times, it’s just so unfortunate that the graphic fidelity is so freaking inconsistent.
PlayStation Universe: 8.5 / 10 by John-Paul Jones
A welcome surprise, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon really clicked with me. The Euro indie Skyrim that could, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon might not be as technically sound as other genre efforts, but across its 60-80 hour playtime there's a lot to enjoy here, while its inventive take on Arthurian legends and surprisingly effective writing all add up to make it a compelling prospect for RPG fans everywhere that don't want to wait 89 years for the next mainline Elder Scrolls title to drop.
