Much-criticized Civilization 7 will get big maps, and a few other welcome new features. Firaxis says is just the beginning
A major update to Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is coming, with larger maps, new gameplay settings, and modder expected to arrive in June.

After a poor launch, Civilization 7 is trying to get back on track. Firaxis Games studio announced that on June 17th, the game will get the 1.2.2 update - according to the developers, the biggest one so far. The creators still emphasize, however, that this is just the beginning of far-reaching changes.
- One of the key new features will be the introduction of large and huge maps. In single-player mode, the first map can have up to 10 civilizations, while the second one can have as many as 12. In multiplayer mode, the limit of 8 nations will remain unchanged. Larger areas will put more strain on the hardware, so weaker computers may experience longer wait times or performance drops. Owners of PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles will also have access to large and huge maps.
- The update marked with number 1.2.2 will increase the flexibility of gameplay in Civilization 7. This means, among other things, the ability to adjust the artificial intelligence of opponents (e.g., in the fields of economy or warfare) or the hostility of independent powers, which has been a source of irritation for many players.
- The new settings will allow you to choose any civilization after advancing to a new era. This also applies to those we were unable to unlock during the game. We'll also choose a bunch of crises ourselves, gain the option to disable legacy paths, and even achieve victory on points.
- The devs will facilitate the work of s, guaranteeing for the Steam workshop. With the update, documentation will be published with best clues for creating new content.
- You can check out the full list of changes on the official game website.
Civilization 7 was released on February 11, 2025, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch. On June 5th, Firaxis Games' creation launched on Nintendo Switch 2.
